FFXI 360 Initial Impressions
Submitted by sam on Tue, 04/18/2006 - 17:47.

Well, just got back from lunch with my FFXI 360 box. I haven't had a chance to install it or try it out yet, but I plan on doing so in this thread after I go home to play it. However, I do have some initial impressions I'd like to share with everyone (may help fencesitters decide whether they want to shell out the money for it or not)...

First of all, it's just a normal sized 360 game box. Unlike the PS2 release, there is no massive manual full of stuff that no one is ever going to read. I guess that's good... I guess... whatever. The manual is 61 pages long, and supposedly covers all 3 expansion packs.

Second of all, there is a command cheat sheet, which is kind of cool, IMHO. Typing "/?" and seeing all commands scroll by a million miles an hour is kind of useless, so having a quick cheat sheet is nice (even if it will be changing over time).

Third of all, I also got the PS2 expansion (ToUA) and I must say I like the artwork on the PS2 box much better. The 360 box is just a big silver thing with "XI".... meh... boring!

Anyway, when I get off work today, I'll race home and try it out. I'll post more comments in this thread later.

Maior's Impression, Other Impression

I read a review of FFXI on the XBOX 360 months and months ago and for Graphics (not game play) the reviewer said FFXI Graphics went like this:

PC (with decent video card the best FFXI graphics)

XBOX 360

PS2 (the weakest FFXI graphics)

360

If you have a TV ready for HD that works with the 360, then the FFXI will look better than the others. SE announced that the FFXI version has higher resolution textures than have ever been released before, and with HD can display higher res than you can find on the PC.

The problem I've found is this seems more highly subjective to your TV than other 360 games. I have a Sony TV that I purchased top of the line several years ago. It supports the middle HD resolution, but not the highest (it must have come out just on the cusp of HD). Anyway, other 360 games can utilize this functionaly, but FFXI seems to be all or nothing. Either you have the highest res, or it switches down to the lowest.

A call to a GM about it (because it actually flickers in a higher res mode before switching) showed me they are aware of the problem (apparently there's many others having this issue) and I've been told they are working on a solution for 360 player.

"Valid Content ID not found"

As is being discussed at great length over at Alla.. many of us coming from PS2/PC to the 360 are getting a "Valid Content ID not found" error when we log in to FFXI.

We can get online in POL, view messages, access content ID, even send/read messages in the Friendlist. But we can't get into FFXI.

Mother fucker....

BAH

After nearly an hour in the GM queue (which I started out as 138/138, but wound up being 113/435 when I logged) I'm giving up and am playing Oblivion....

They have enough people with this problem that they know it's there. All I can do now is wait for a fix.

just a stab...

first of all i have no clue...but did u try to install RoZ and CoP too?

You can't do that :-P

The XBOX 360 comes with all of those pre-installed... you can't uninstall them :-P

This was a bug, and they've fixed it.

i got money riding on this

Five dollars says that /Pol is a command on that cheat sheat seeing as how usually the last month is used for mass production... HAHA let me know sam!

Heh

Didn't check actually... but I will tonight.

Last night I was too pissed off that the 360 version of the game wasn't going to activate until today. I know, I know, they just didn't want to activate part of the content for one day, which makes perfect sense... still pissed me off.

Confirmed

The macros that have been removed are not in the cheat sheet.
